Welcome to Advance!BSD

We are a group of people who believe in Open Source software, which usually enables choice among many other benefits. We are concerned however with de-facto monopols being on the rise in Open Source, too. Find about the project and the people involved here. Or perhaps you'd like to read more about the services we already run.

State of the Net

As enthusiasts interested in technology we want so support an Internet that is a great place for everybody. We are convinced that wherever there's only a single solution to something, that is not a healthy situation at all.

The Web makes up such a big part of the Internet that it's basically unavoidable in many cases. And when you access the Web, only three major browser engines remain (one of which has such a towering market share that the other two are on the verge of irrelevance). All of those are beasts so complex that they rival entire operating systems.

Alternatives

Speaking of which: When it comes to Internet servers, these days it's Linux everywhere. We love Free Open Source Software in all its forms, but even in FOSS a lack of at least some diversity a bad thing. It eliminates competition. It impedes innovation. And worst of all: It takes away choice! Read more about stance on alternatives here or get some information on alternative software.

Our mission: Support technological diversity!

We are promoting use of lesser known software. This endeavor consists of multiple things:

Articles and tutorials

Here you can read more about the BSD operating system family and other alternatives. There's also a list of available tutorials.

VPS

We also plan to create a BSD-first VPS in the long run and the revenue is meant to flow back into Open-Source and especially the *BSD community. How about getting the services you need (webspace, email, etc.) from a BSD-friendly provider? And if that's not good enough: How does doing something good at the same time sound? The services are meant to be offered at moderate prices and all the money left after paying the running costs are to be spent on improving the operating systems of your choice! Read more about the planned VPS here.

A (more) heterogenous landscape

Have you ever tried to run a Unix-like operating system that is not Linux on one of the popular VPS services? Some of them even used to provide some BSD support, but in many cases those efforts have been cut back in the not too distant past. Even before that, the options often felt somewhat (or entirely) like second-class citizens. This is not a healthy situation. Not for people who want to run non-Linux systems and not even for anybody else. Here you can read more about the path to a more heterogenous computer landscape.
